Mini Movie Reviews

Cavite-2006
This indie thriller has some good points, but some big bad points too. First of all just to much POV camera action. Also, it is SO hard to believe that you just can't get into it so much. It is good for the tension it creates as a young man goes home to the Philippines and because a pawn in a terror plot. 2.5 of 5 stars.

The Lost City-2005
Some will say that this movie is too sentimental. But there is heart to it and you can see it is a labor of love for Andy Garcia. A tale of Havana before Castro, Garcia show no partiality to the Bautista regime the proceeded Castro, except maybe that they allowed more beauty. It is a film that I very much liked, because it had so much heart. 4.5 stars of 5.

The Secret of Kells- 2009
An animated film of mythic Ireland, the movie is magical and mysterious. The faeries do inhabit the land as orthodoxy tries to change how people live. The animation is equally magical. It was nominated for best animated feature and did not win the Oscar...but it came close in my mind. 4 of 5 stars.

Yentl- 1983
Barbra's labor of love here, a film she spent years trying to make. She stars in and directs this musical film about a young woman who so much wants to learn of god, she defies all convention and acts as a man to learn the Talmud. It is a very moving story and sometimes very funny, as Barbra can be. 4 of 5 stars.

The Irish Tenors- 2000
This concert that was originally on PBS has two concerts from the Irish Tenors. I enjoyed the first much more than the second. The beautifully sung Irish songs and ballads are touching, and the feeling that the tenors imbue in each selection is very moving. 4 of 5 stars.
